Bill Gates (born Oct. 28, 1955) is the principal co-founder of Microsoft Corp., the world’s largest personal-computer software company and one of the largest and most influential technology companies in the world. Since he stepped down as chairman of Microsoft Corp., he has focused on and contributed billions of dollars to several charities, especially the Bill Melinda Gates Foundation, the worlds largest private charitable foundation. Early Life Bill Gates (full name: William Henry Gates III) was born on Oct. 28, 1955, in Seattle, Washington, the son of William H. Gates wrote his first  software  program at 13 and in high school  was part of a group, which also included childhood friend Paul Allen, that computerized their school’s payroll system and developed Traf-O-Data, a traffic-counting system that they sold to local governments. Gates and Allen wanted to start their own company immediately, but Gates parents wanted him to finish high school and go on to college, hoping he eventually would become a lawyer. In 1975 Gates, then a sophomore at  Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts, joined Allen, who was working as a programmer for Honeywell near Boston, to write software for the first  microcomputers, later called PCs. They started by adapting  BASIC, a popular programming language for large computers. Starting Microsoft With the success of this project, Gates left Harvard during his junior year and, with Allen, moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, planning to develop software for the newly emerging personal computer market. In 1975 they started what Allen named Micro-Soft by combining micro from microcomputers and soft from software. The hyphen later was dropped. In 1979, they moved the company to Bellevue, Washington, just east of Seattle. Microsoft became famous for its computer operating systems and killer business deals. In 1980, Gates and Allen licensed an  operating system  called  MS-DOS  to IBM, at the time the worlds largest computer maker, for its first microcomputer, the  IBM PC. They were smart enough to retain the right to license the operating system to other companies, which eventually made them a fortune. Finding Success By 1983, the year Allen left the company for health reasons, Microsofts reach had become global with offices in Great Britain and Japan and 30% of the worlds computers running on its software. A few years earlier, Gates had developed a partnership with Apple to work on some shared projects. Gates soon realized that Apples graphics interface, which displayed text and images on the screen and was driven by a mouse, appealed to the average user more than Microsofts text-and-keyboard-driven MS-DOS system. He launched an ad campaign claiming that Microsoft was developing an operating system that would use a graphic interface similar to Apples products. Called Windows, it would be compatible with all MS-DOS system software. The announcement was a bluff—Microsoft had no such program under development—but it was sheer genius as a marketing tactic: It would encourage people using MS-DOS to wait for new Windows software releases instead of changing to another system, such as Apples Macintosh. In November 1985, nearly two years after his announcement, Gates and Microsoft launched Windows.  Then, in 1989, Microsoft launched Microsoft Office, which bundled office applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel into one system. Perils of Success All the while, Gates was defending Microsoft against lawsuits and Federal Trade Commission and Department of Justice investigations of claims charging unfair dealings with computer manufacturers. Yet the innovation continued. Windows 95 was launched in 1995 and in 2001 Microsoft debuted the original Xbox gaming system. Microsoft appeared untouchable. In 2000, Gates stepped down as Microsoft CEO and was succeeded by Harvard friend and longtime Microsoft executive Steve Ballmer. Gates assumed the new role of chief software architect. In 2008 Gates left his daily job at Microsoft but retained his position as board chairman until 2014, when he stepped down as chairman but retained a board seat and began serving as technology adviser. Marriage and Family On Jan. 1, 1994, Gates married Melinda French, who has an MBA and a bachelors degree in computer science and met him while she was working at Microsoft. They have three children—Jennifer, Rory, and Phoebe—and live in Xanadu 2.0,  a  66,000-square-foot mansion overlooking Lake Washington  in  Medina, Washington. Philanthropy Gates and his wife founded the Bill Melinda Gates Foundation with the mission of improving the quality of life for people around the world, primarily in the areas of global health and learning. Their initiatives have ranged from funding tuition for 20,000 college students to installing 47,000 computers in 11,000 libraries in all 50 states. In 2005, Bill and Melinda Gates and rock star Bono were named Time magazine persons of the year for their charitable work. Discuss Carson's view in the context of the history of management theory and evaluate the relevance of McGregor's theories t - Essay Example The theories were based on a number of assumptions which a manager can use to motivate his employees (Koontz and Weihrich 2007). Managers who apply theory X in their management practices believe that employees do not like work. People are generally lazy and do not like responsibility. They avoid work and lack ambition and as a result, managers have to direct them and force them to work. On the other hand, managers who apply theory Y believe that employees are self -motivated, like work and are responsible. However, according to Carson (2005), â€Å"McGregor did not originate these ideas; he just made them easy for practitioners to use and implement in their work environments.† This paper discusses Carson’s view in the context of the history of management and also evaluates the relevance of McGregor’s theories to the contemporary leisure industry. Early foundations of theory Y The foundations of theory Y can be traced back to as early as 1690. The initial ideas of the theory were introduced by Locke in the year 1690 and Smith 1776. The philosophy by Locke was law based. The four ideas in his philosophy were; law based on purpose rather than arbitrary, government deriving powers from its citizens, freedom to pursue personal objectives as a natural right, as well as use of private property in search of happiness as a legally protected and natural right. These ideas have a connection with theory Y in that they all focus on an individual (Carson 2005). It is important to note that theory Y and theory X focus on individual behavior and their motives to work. Locke suggested that power, legal matters and liberty are influential at personal pursuance of goals and objectives. People need to be given the freedom to do their own things. He argued that individuals use their own properties in order to pursue happiness and objectives and they should not be dictated on how to achieve that fate. This is the same manner with which McGregor placed his theory . He argued that managers do not have to put much pressure on employees for them to perform. Instead, they should have faith in them. Each individual employee should be given a responsibility and the employer should trust him or her with it. Employers and managers should give employees freedom to carry out their duties (Lussier and Achua 2010). Smith presented an idea similar to that by Locke in that it focused on freedom. His liberal economics were developed in a period when there was less government control and interjection. The government interjection was similar to the assumption in McGregor’s theory X that people do not like work, have little ambition and tend to avoid responsibility. Smith advocated for a free market that gives an opportunity for competition. For a free market to be achieved, people should be accorded the liberty to make decisions on their own (Lusch and Vargo 2006). This was a foundational idea to the assumption by McGregor in his theory Y which indica ted that managers do not have to input external control or threat of punishment to make employees work towards achieving the organizational objectives. He suggested that man has the ability to exercise self- control as well as self- direction towards achieving the goals to a service in which they are committed (Carson 2005). Especially in the beginning of the story, she is not very happy with her weight and it takes a long time to find new friends when they move to another city. I think this message is very important. Especially because more people are using drugs. Drugs arent good for your health and you can get addicted. So less people should use drugs. 6. Alice talked to and old priest who really understood young people. He called her mom and dad. The still loved her and came to get her. If Alice is out of school she wants to help people like her. Page 90-109 Alice started a new diary. Alice thought that drugs werent worth the bull shit. Her grandparents came to visit her. They looked much older. She wanted to make her grandparents proud again. She had to go back to school again. While Alice was lying on her bed, planning her mothers birthday, she got a sort of awful flash back, that she would rather forget. Jan asked Alice to go to a party, but she said:no thanks. Alices grandpa had had a stroke. Her grandpa is doing worse. Hes in a coma. Than her grandpa died. Someone had put a joint into Alices purse. She was scared. Alice met Joel at the school library. At the 16th of June, Alices grandmother died in her sleep. Joel gave her Alice a lot of strength and offered her to go to the funeral. I expected that she would do anything to stay away from the drugs. The book didnt end the way I had expected. Alice died instead of everything would be good. I would have liked it to end in a different way. I would have liked it that Alice was still alive. And that she good live her life further without drugs. Overall opinion: I liked the book, because while reading this book I know a lot more about drugs. I also liked the book because you can see everything through the eyes of a drug addict. And normally you only hear stories about drugs from people who have never used drugs.

First day of the rest of my life, my stomach is in knots and I can’t seem to do anything with my hair. I have all my pens, papers, notebooks and other miscellaneous items stuffed into my brand new blue book bag. My mother is down stairs on the patio drinking her morning tea watching the world wake up. I gave my brand new shoes a quick shine, checked my hair about three more times each time finding something new wrong.
